Sugar Land Pediatric Dentists Help Fight the Sugar Wars
Every five years the American Dietary Guidelines are revised to focus on food that Americans should be eating on a regular basis. In the most recent version for 2015-2020, the guidelines suggest Americans limit their intake of added sugars to 10% of daily calories. Pediatric dentists in Sugar Land Texas fully support this change and compiled a list of tips their patients can follow to reduce added sugars in their diet.
1. Don’t drink your sugar. Instead of drinking fruit juices which are often loaded with added sugars, go for whole fruit. Also watch out for sport drinks, energy drinks, flavored water and tea which are often loaded with more sugar than you realize.
2. Read labels. You may be surprised to find added sugar in the products you use every day that are not even sweet including ketchup, salad dressing and even some mixed spices. Being careful to read labels takes longer when shopping, but over time you will get used to brands that do and do not use added sugars.
3. Pack on the protein. Whether you add more eggs to your breakfast or extra deli meat to your sandwich, protein allows you to feel fuller longer and will reduce your cravings for sugary treats.
